In the community of Hartington there is the cedar County Historical Museum which until a new 40 x 60 foot building was built was located in what, in 1900, was a private home.  The house was filled with treasures of the Nebraska heritage to display for your education and enjoyment.   Now the new building houses even more of the antique machinery and horse drawn buggies.  Read more

Seeing the awe inspiring rock on the trip from the east coast on the Oregon, California and Mormon Trail made those traveling want to stop and leave something for those that would follow behind.  There were pictures describing their trip west, words of “wisdom” and encouragement were left.  All were part of a great movement of people and ideas that passed by Chimney Rock in the years 1812 – 1866.  

There are a number of the artifacts housed in the Visitor Center for you to see.  There is also a digital presentation of the material as part of the Western Trails Project that is available for you to view to get a better understanding of those thoughts and remnants from the brave people that headed west during that timeframe. Wyobraska Wildlife Museum - Gering, Nebraska

This museum, located in Gering is a collection of more than 500 animals that have undergone taxidermy and are then set up in replicas of what would have been their natural habitats.

The museum has many animals that are currently roaming the earth, but they also have quite a few extinct animals in their dioramas, including a replica of a prehistoric rhino that stands 19 feet tall. Read more

Tucked in the northeast part of the state is the community of Tekamah with its proud history and willingness to share the story with the rest of the world.  Here you will have the pleasure of visiting the E.C. Houston House, the C.D. Houston House, the Nolana one-room schoolhouse and annex, and stroll across the Folsom Park Footbridge between the two homes of the Houston brothers.  There is also the opportunity to enjoy the goldfish pond, tumbling waterfalls and see the wide variety of plants and shrubbery. Occasionally we need to take the time to visit the sites of nature, whether on a trip or if we live in the area.  The Olson Nature Preserve gives that opportunity to everyone that wants to see what beauty lies in the sandhills of Nebraska.  Here, at the easternmost tip of the sandhills the wonders of nature are alive with the half-mile plus stretch of Beaver Creek.  This perennial spring fed stream forms the geological boundary between the sandhills and the rolling loess hardlands to the east.  Read more
