Growing up in Beatrice we often visited the museum for field trips and I always enjoyed going. It has been many years since then it may be time to go back and relearn what they have to offer.

I ran across this article while looking for similar articles about bison kill sites in Alberta, Canada. As soon as I saw the title, I realized I had a modicum of first hand knowledge about the site. I clearly remember sitting in class listening to Dr Aggenbroad describing his find, and it's potential significance. I never became a geologist, nor a paleontologist; but remember the many classes I took in Earth Sciences-probably because I found Dr. Aggenbroad to be an excellent teacher. With regard to the controversy, I certainly cannot speak from any factual standpoint. From a pejudicial standpoint, any theory advanced by Larry Aggenbroad deserves the attention and full consideration of the listener.

Two comments above also sparked my interest. Both Sterling Betts and Peggy Corman were my classmates. Sterling was actually one of my room mates in Rapid City SD, where we had been assigned for our student teaching rotation from Chadron State College. Sterling was an interesting and energetic guy. He was probably 35 years older than me, but wanted the formal scientific degree to match his lifetime of practical geological and archeological study. Its funny that just recently I remembered him and wondered what became of him. As for Peggy, I remember a bright and energetic beauty that made me wish I was not already a married man.

My Grandfather's name was Charles Eckley, he was married to Ila Frank. They had five sons and one daughter. My father was Richard Eckley. My father passed away about 40 years ago. I was wondering if you have any information on his parents? My father was a concert pianist and his mother was musically gifted also, I believe she played the Violin. Thank you for any info you can give me. Sincerely, Susan Severson

If you are lucky enough to be in town on the first friday of the month, the haymarket and the two art galleries on 9th and O have special gallery openings with the artists milling about. Great stuff that doesn't have big city prices. Worth a visit to these galleries anytime you are in town.

I recently attended a funeral there & it being my first visit to a Natinal Cemetery, can't begin to tell you how impressed I was at the services. The cemetery was absolutely beautiful and sent chills running down my spine. I would like to learn more about it. I live in Omaha.

Hello,
I am trying to locate my great grandmothers grave site. In her obituary it says that she was taken to Valentine, and then interned in the Valentine Cemetery. Her name was Christina Bunnell (maiden name Mannhalter) b. 1890 d. Dec 30,1910. Does anyone know where the cemetery is located?

The Winnebago powwow is always a good powwow. They now charge native peoples for entrance to the powwow. The Winnebago Powwow is not the oldest powwow for the record. The Omahas gave them the Haythushka society which is a public warrior/veteran society. The Winnebagos did have songs, dances, and customs for their warriors prior to moving to Nebraska but today they practice the formalities of the Omaha He'thushka He' Dewachi(Dance of Giving Dance or The Harvest Dance) which itself gets more in depth and detailed why the songs are sung, dances are danced, and so forth.

I was told that my great grandparents worked at the Opera House in the 1880's. I know that it was destroyed in 1904 by a tornado. I remember seeing pictures of the tornado that my grandmother had. If there is a way, please let me know if Jacob E. Cole and Sarah J Cole worked at the Opera house. I was told Sarah made costumes. Anything you might have would be wonderful. Thank you for your time.

I heard (I don't remember the circumstances) that the number of skulls located is significantly less than the probable number of animals found so far. That would seem to indicate human involvement in the removal of same from the kill site, perhaps for ceremonial reasons.

Hi I am interested in my family history. I have been told my family owned a livery stable in Valentine or around that area. Their name was Bullus (I think). My grandma was born January 10, 1902. Please let me know if you have any information that could be helpful.

Thanks

To the staff and members of Mona
I have a painting of a mountain, lakeside cabin scene, 18" X 36" painted in 1925 by a TL Kearney of Wood River Nebraska, does anyone know who this painter was, his work is actually quite good. I would appreciate any information you might be able to give me on this artist. Thanks Patty

Origin of the name "Rock Island Table", Custer County, NE

"Parish records indicate that Nils moved in 1856 from Tullen to Brattforshyttan, Brattfors parish. In 1859 he moved to Forshyttan, Brattfors parish, and on October 24, 1861 he moved back to Brattforshyttan. On October 16, 1863 he moved to Yngshyttan, Färnebo parish, and in 1864 to Persbergs gruvor, Färnebo parish, where he worked in the Krangruvan iron mine with brother Anders. During his earlier years at Brattforshyttan and Forshyttan (1856-61), he had worked as a farmhand. Nils and family emigrated to America on April 4, 1880, and after living at Rock Island, Illinois, for awhile, they finally settled on Rock Island Table (named by Nils and Anders), Custer County, Nebraska. On September 7, 1883, Nils filed a homestead land claim on the SW 1/4 of Section 6, T13N R 24 W in Custer County, a part of Delight Township (later Wayne Township). After his wife Anna Lovisa Lekberg died in 1913, Nils returned that same year to Färnebo parish, Sweden. His brother Anders had died in 1905, and his son Anders Gustaf and family had returned to Sweden in 1910, leaving him no reason to remain in America." (a quote from our family genealogy)

One of the graves on the LINSTEDT FARM CEMETERY is that of my great-aunt, Anna Lovisa Bratten, born in 1838 near Filipstad Sweden, and who died on the farm Febuary 1, 1913. Her husband Nils Bratten, a brother of my great-grandfather Anders Bratten, filed a homestead claim on the land September 7, 1883 (SW 1/4 of Section 6, T13N R 24 W in Custer County, a part of Delight Township, later Wayne Township). My understanding is that Nils sold the land to the Linstedt family in 1913, who subsequently used the site to bury their family members.

I saw the Society's website listing the forgotten cemeteries in Custer County. The Linstedt Cemerery is the last one listed. I thougt the above information would be of interest. I visited the cemetery in 2008 and found Anna Lovisa's grave, as a favor to my cousin in Sweden. recall the engraving on the stone said just "Bratten".

I am looking for information on the ghost town of Dewitty and the cemetery associated with it. I cannot find it on any map. The only description of the location is: "Approximately 10 miles north and east of Brownlee." I would like to visit the site, but would prefer to have coordinates or at least a road to be on before I venture all the way from Omaha! :-) Do you have any more information you could share with me? Thank you!

I am looking for information on the MW Ranch which I understand became the Bachelor Ranch. My grandfther and his parents immigrated from Germany to NE and worked on the ranch, 1925-26. I am also interested in John H Bachelor. From my fmaily documents, it looks like my grandfather's cousin, Emma Wolf, married John Bachelor prior to the 1930 census. I also have documents indicating some sort of court action between John and Emma's father, Peter Wolf. I would love to close this gap in our family history! Thank you for your help!

While the contributions of Todd and Rapson in the 1990's are very valuable, current research strengthens the theory put forth by Aggenbroad that this was a single kill event consisting of 1 kill event or possibly several smaller events over a period of a month or so. In its 9,800 and some odd years of existance, smaller events during 1 month should be considered a "single" kill. No evidance of envirmental cause such as a flash fire or flood has been found.

I would like to know if this museum has been in Valentine since the early 1900's. My sister, my sister in law are going to visit there in early July and would like to know what the procedure is to be able to visit the museum. Through the years we have always heard that our grandfather or great gandfather had given a set of spurs to the museum and wondering if we have the right one. Their names were Mecijah and Edmond Harris and were blacksmiths in that area. Any information you have would help. Thank you. Carol King

This is a reach. As a freshman in high school, I got to dig at Hudson-Meng for the week-end! It was fantastic. I am trying to locate Peggy Corman, she mapped at that time, (and talked Dr. Agenbroad into letting me stay and dig). That was in 1973, or around there. Hopefully someone knows where I can reach her. Thanks!

Our friend who lives in Merriman took us to the Bowring Ranch one afternoon recently and I loved the place! There are soooo many things to see! If you like history, you will love this place too. It is peaceful there. Our tour guide's name was Pat and she totally went out of her way to provide us with information regarding everything found there. THANK YOU PAT :) It was so cool to see old items and to learn about how people used them years ago! Mrs. Bowring's invitations to luncheons with Presidents, Pictures with Presidents, dress/hat/glove collection and collectible dishes were just amazing! A MUST SEE!!!

My father, Arthur Melvin ROTH was born in Comstock. His father, Richard Edgar "Ed" ROTH, moved to Comstock in 1879 with his parents and two younger brothers, when he was a child. Ed's sister Dora Alice ROTH, born in Comstock, married Samuel Pearl WALTON, later, she married Henry Ormand PIERCE.

The following account is from my cousin Margaret Mary WALDMANN_BADER:

"By the way our own Dora Roth's daughter Dorothy Pierce married Curtis Dowse, the son of Wm Dowse who built the house. So Curt actually lived in the house before he married Dorothy. Dora, as you know, was a sister to W. B. and Edgar, and Mary, and Fred, and Hal."

"W.B." was grandpa ROTHs brother, William Bradley ROTH, Margaret Mary's grandfather. "Hal" was their sister, Halycon ROTH.

I've visited the DOWSE Soddy with my family at least 5 times during my life.

Regards,
Paul Alan ROTH

Has anyone at any time, in any way attempted to generate a register showing any of the deceased there in Boot Hill. I believe my great, great, great grandfather, Samuel Monroe Crozier (Crosier) is there. He was killed by the Cheyenne after 1838.

Faiing this, is there any other record I could access that you might direct me to?
Thanks for any effort you make in this search

Visited the Dowse sod house and had very interesting experiences. The house was FULL of flies. Thousands of them. After letting them out, we went inside. It was a very hot Nebraska afternoon. When we entered the bedroom the temperature went down about 25 degrees. hhhmmm. We enjoyed the trip back into pioneer life very much! Got some nice pictures as well.

We were in Alliance last summer (first time back home in about 20 years) were so looking forward to touring dobbys, , but was closed. will it be open in the summer of 2010?

"We are planning on having it open for the summer of 2010. It is a work in progress, but we have some great volunteers to help. "

Thank you

I am looking for death records or certificates for James and Margaret Hay in the town of St. james in 1898 and 1899.
Do you have any idea where I might look?
They were members of the ME Church, is it still around.

Thanks,

I was there the day they found the large point & 2 small ones. Whenever they made a significant find, whoever was close to the pond got thrown in. I think Mr. Meng was thrown in about 3 times that day. He was loving it.
