In the summer of 2008, I was able to work for a couple of weeks as an interpreter giving tours at Hudson-Meng. I'm somewhat disturbed that this website mentions only the research done in the 1990's. Dr. Larry Agenbroad's earlier research, and ongoing research by other archaeologists, shows definite proof of human involvement, including a point (essentially an arrowhead) imbedded in the ribcage of one of the bison. Tours given at the site emphasize that there was human involvement. It's a great site and I suggest taking a tour to anyone -- in particular to the authors of this site, so they can update some of their information!

Boot Hill

My grandfather lives across from boot hill, and family has traced back for a hundred years. For my whole life i have loved to play on and by the Hill. Almost every day i will go up there and read the stones and markers. I myself think that the old monument should get moved downtown to front street, it will be more of an attraction for the town. And i really have enjoyed the new monument.

I am looking for images relating to the Kincaid act of 1904. I understand that the land office in Valentine had a huge response to the Act. I am looking for photo's that relate to claim filing , actual claims, the land office Etc. I could use a good xerox copy of anything related that you might have. I will be glad to pay for your help. Thank you , Kit Watson, Chadron, NE 69337. 308-432-5098

Atop the 400 foot tower of the Nebraska State Capitol stands the Sower, a figure casting the seeds of life to the winds. Lee Lawrie’s statue is modeled after the traditional method of hand sowing grain for planting, and is a symbol of the importance of Agriculture to the development of civilization. Agriculture being the foundation upon which Nebraskans have built a noble life.

The 19 1/2 foot tall figure stands on a pedestal of shocks of wheat and corn. Lawrie represents this timeless symbol of Agriculture as a barefoot man, shirt sleeves and pant legs rolled up as he works, wearing a sun hood. The 3/8 inch thick bronze sculpture is reinforced by an interior steel framework and weighs nearly 9 1/2 tons.

Thank you for asking. The Crane Meadow Nature Center is now open and known by the name Nebraska Nature and Visitor Center. The new organization will continue the tours and has fixed the facility up to be attractive to those that come and visit. The crane season will certainly be a great time to visit so come on out!!

We were in Lincoln last week for the horse races and we drove around and looked Lincoln over. My aunt lived there for many years, but I never did get there when she lived there. We saw the very impressive capitol building, but could not make out the statue on top. Could you please tell me what it is. Thanks!

Randy and Mary are awesome! We rented a canoe from Brewers and had an excellent, friendly and helpful experience. We had stopped at another Canoe outfitters first and quickly discovered they were not helpful nor accomodating so we went down the road to Brewer's. They made our Valentine weekend pleasant and hassel free.
Thanks Randy and Mary!

Amy John I would like to say that I have been to the museum several times. It is a great experiance each and every time that I go. I visited with someone the other day. Didn't write down her name. She was going to get ahold of you on this. I work at the Norfolk Veterans home in Norfolk NE. One of the schools that we do things with was interested in coming to the Air and Space for a field trip and asked if we would be able to come also. I have been wanting to get some of the Members (residents to the museum). This would be a great activity. A rough count would be 15 students (5th graders) 4 shaparones for them. 6-7 veterans and 4 shaparones for them. That is about 30 total. We are looking at the last week in april. Preferably not a monday or Friday. Thanks for any info and anything you can do for us. God Bless America and your families. Mary Swensen Norfolk Veteran's Home Activities Assistant

I am putting together a program for high school seniors and would like to ask for posters that showcase your state. I want to show them places to go in the US. Posters will work the best but anything you can send will be appreciated.

I think the best thing to visit in Lincoln is a home football game for the University of Nebraska. 87,000 fans come out to see the Huskers at Memorial Stadium and it's truly amazing to see.

My father , as well as my mother, was born in Mason City. He has a fair sized collection of Indian artifacts which he found over the course of growing up in the area during the 20's and 30's. He would like to donate them if the museum is interested.

Please advise.
Thank you,

Dancers of the Plains is an entertaining and educational Native American event, featuring Native American dancing and drumming by the Plains tribes. In 2009 the Great Platte River Road Archway welcomes the Pawnee Nation of Oklahoma back to their traditional homeland for the featured tribe of the first exhibition of a pow wow celebration. Visitors can also learn about Native American life on the plains from primitive-life exhibitors and vendors, enjoy American Indian style food and crafts, and more. Admission to the primitive exhibitor and pow wow exhibition area will be by free-will donation. Guests can also tour the Archway at regular admission prices.

Join us on June 20, 2009 for the Pawnee Powwow with 16 or 17 Pawnee dancers. Starting 2010 we will be making this a yearly event with several Native American nations competing in the powwow.

10:00 to 4:00pm CST Vendors and Demonstrations
1:00 to 3:00pm Dance and Drum Exhibition
		                  Pawnee Performance
Soldier song dances, round dances and war dances

Sarah Wright from the Archway Group.

Thanks Sarah for the updated information! We hope there are so many people there you will wonder where to put them all!!

I find it to quite disheartening to see that you have once again taken the life of a huge, beautiful tree. It seems that in this day and age you could find a permanent, non-living substitute. To destroy in days what took years to achieve just isn't right. Some might think me to be a grinch but this is my opinion.

We have a photograph taken around 1886 of our ancestors in the Broken Bow area. We are making copies and would like to donate the original to your museum. The size is 14 x 20 inches and was re-framed about 50 years ago.

The photo is of a sod house with the DeMerritt family members standing in front. We have figured out who all the people are and have figured out from the apparent ages of the children that it was taken in 1886.

The story handed down is that a photographer came by and took the photo. We don't know the name of the photographer.

Please email me to let me know if you would accept this gift. Of course, a monetary donation would accompany the gift. Once I have an email address for you, I can send a jpg of the photo.

Thanks, Stephonie

I am in need of some help. My great great grandfather was in the civil war. I was given the only known copy of his journal that he wrote before, during and after the war. I also found out that he was a quartermaster and attended meetings and kept notes. I have a lot of these notes. I have names and dates and lists of those that were wounded and killed. Alot of these pages are fading because of there age and time. I am in hopes that you can help me preserve these or direct me to some one that can. I do not want to looses these as they are not only a peice of history, but also a part of my family history.

                                Thank you for your time

Does the museum have postcards or prints of the 100th Meridian Marker for sale and would it be possible to buy something over the phone or online?

I had the honor of meeting Mr. Sterling Betts several years ago in Chaldron, Neb. He was a retired Geologist. I was honored when he gave to my grandson one of the buffalo ribs from the great buffalo kill 10;000 years ago. It was a part of his collection he had gathered during his time of working. He also gave my grandson several fossils and other artifacts that we still treasure to this day. . We had a wonderful 5 hour visit with Mr. Betts showing us his treasures. It was a highlight of our vacation. it was a chance meeting at the local Post Office mailing some cards home that I met him and he invited us to his home. My grandson has shown the rib to several of his teachers sionce then.

I am looking for a copy of the book "Sand In Her Shoes" by Marianne Beel and have been told that you might have a copy for sale. We are planning a large family get together in Nebraska and feel it would be a way to introduce that part of Nebraska to the grandchildren. Please let me know if you know of how I can get a copy or if you have any suggestions of other books of earily Nebraska that would be good for this purpose.
