Joslyn Art Museum - Omaha, Nebraska

Joslyn Art Museum - Omaha, Nebraska.jpegIn Omaha, Nebraska, the Joslyn Art Museum is the only place to visit when you want to see fine arts, as it is the only museum in the state with an encyclopedic permanent collection. From permanent collections to special exhibits to educational resources, this one has it all.

Open since 1931, Joslyn Art Museum was a gift to the city of Omaha, from Sarah Joslyn. She wanted a special remembrance of George, her husband, an Omaha businessman and community leader. The general focus of the museum is art from antiquity to the present, noting specifically 19th and 20th century European and American art.

Of special importance to Omaha is the Western American Collection of art, featuring the watercolors and prints of Karl Bodner, documenting his 19th century journey to the Missouri River frontier. The Native American Collection features contemporary art as well as some pieces that are nearly two hundred years old. The Twentieth Century Collection shows great diversity within that era, with Modernism, Regionalism, and Abstract Expressionism all being represented. Other collections include Ancient, European, and American art.

Joslyn Art Museum also features many temporary special exhibits, such as Illuminating the World: Saint John’s Bible, Thomas Moran’s West: The Yellowstone Suite, and Edward Weston: A Photographer’s Love of Life. In the latter, Weston’s entire photographic career is included, as well as personal cards and letters from his family. Moran’s exhibit highlights his Yellowstone National Park portfolio of fifteen chromolithographs, which were some of the first images of the park available to the public.

While Saint John’s Bible is being crafted (the first handwritten Bible since the invention of the printing press), some of the unbound pages are being shown in this very special collection. It is being completely handwritten with quill pens that utilize goose, turkey, and swan feathers.
Education is an integral part of the Joslyn Art Museum, with school tours, outreach trunks, and teacher resources. Offered in the school tours are both guided tours and self-guided tours, geared to various age levels. Guided tours last approximately fifty minutes, with art-making sessions being an available option. Outreach trunks can be loaned out to schools or other organizations, and include touchable objects, slides/posters, books, cassettes, etc. Also available to be loaned out to schools are educational resources, such as packets, videos, and the like.

Yearly memberships are offered to the Joslyn Art Museum, and include a membership card, free admission during regular hours, members only receptions and exhibition openings, subscription to members’ magazine, reduced prices on classes and special events, ten percent discount at the museum shop and café, and discounts on national and international art magazines.

Associate and sustaining memberships also include guest passes, recognition in Joslyn’s Annual Report, reciprocal membership to other museums, and invitations to exclusive members-only events. Prices of the memberships range from $30 to $500.

Joslyn Art Museum is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10:00 AM through 4:00 PM, Sundays noon through 4:00 PM, and is closed on major holidays. Adults are admitted for $7, senior citizens and college students for $5, children 5 through 17 for $4, and children 5 and under and museum members are admitted free.

It sounds like you will truly enjoy this exhibit and understand the complex nature of the Asian artistry.

“This particular exhibit will be of The Qing (pronounced Ching) dynasty in China began in 1664, after the Manchu overthrow of the Han Ming empire and with the ascension to the throne of seven-year-old Emperor Kangxi. It endured for more than 250 years, until 1911, when revolt led to the establishment of the Republic of China (now, the People’s Republic of China).
The exhibition spans the entire dynasty, presenting over 200 porcelain, metal, lacquer, textile, ivory, and jade objects, some produced under the supervision of the court and in the imperial workshops. The objects, many created for the court or its officials, offer visitors the opportunity to experience the magnificence of Qing creativity at its finest, contrasted by items produced for commerce as the dynasty drew to a close. Included are examples of porcelain from the imperial kilns at Jingdezhen, with their remarkable glazes and enameling; textiles demonstrating court dress; furniture from the Summer Palace; and smaller objects, such as belt buckles and abstinence plaques. A highlight is the 18th-century, eight-panel, carved red lacquer screen recently acquired by Joslyn Art Museum, which will, for the first time, be placed in the context of Qing dynasty decorative arts.” (this information was obtained from the Joslyn Art Museum website for upcoming events.
