Omaha Children’s Museum - Omaha, Nebraska
Whether you live in or near Omaha or are just visiting, and you have children or grandchildren, there is one place in the city that shouldn’t be missed, and that place is the Omaha Children’s Museum. You’ll have as much fun as the kiddies as you watch their joyous participation in the many activities and special events specifically designed to educate and entertain.
Currently, a special exhibit duplicating the set of the enormously popular Sesame Street offers children the opportunity to visit the famed brownstone façade at 123 Sesame Street, where kids can sit on the steps and watch their familiar Muppet friends on screen and count along with “The Count”, sing along with Elmo, and count in Spanish with Rosita.
A playground exhibit allows children to turn a crank that spins letters and discover new words, experiment with notes and scales, play a set of steel drums, and much more.
Among the many permanent exhibits is a creative arts center complete with artist-in-residence, where children can learn the various techniques of drawing and painting, learn about different types of art from community artists, and a face painting area where the kids can have lots of fun decorating themselves and their friends, under a museum artists supervision, of course.
At the construction exhibit would-be architects and builders of the future can build structures of whatever size and shape their imagination dictates, using Giant Lego Blocks, builder boards and even giant Popsicle stick replicas.
Then, there is the Rainbow Farm, where children can pet and play with common farm animals such as chickens and pigs, collect eggs from the henhouse and even learn how to milk a cow.
The Toddler Exploration Center is another popular play spot where the little ones from 1 to 4 years of age can crawl or toddle through an area filled with tunnels, toys and fascinating gadgets.
A Baker’s Store complete with grocery carts and simulated food packages on the shelves offers the older kids an opportunity to shop on their own and even learn how the checkout counter operates. Many other permanent and temporary exhibits provide a full days fun and a valuable learning experience as well. Add to all of this a hands-on childrens science gallery and television studio and the continued popularity of the museum with locals and visitors alike can be easily understood. All-in-all, the Omaha Children’s Museum is well worth a visit.
