Frank House in Kearney, Nebraska

The Frank House is a true gem that has permanently carved its way into Kearney’s rich history and the hearts of all who enter its doors. George William Frank Jr., an architect and civil engineer, designed the Richardsonian Romanesque style mansion in 1886. A unique and “cutting edge” home of the Victorian era, the house was said to be the first residence west of the Missouri River wired for electricity during construction. It boasted indoor plumbing with hot and cold running water, two full bathrooms, over 20 closets, steam heating and an electric servants’ call button in the dining room.
The Colorado red sandstone house contains three-stories and supports the 3.5-ton tile roof. The interior features seven of the 10 original fireplaces, golden English oak paneling, hand carved woodwork, and a magnificent staircase that elegantly ascends to an authentic Tiffany stained glass window.  The window was commissioned from the Tiffany Galss Company in New York and is one of the largest Tiffany windows installed in a residence.  This stunning piece of artwork is worthy of a trip to the museum all by itself.  You may think that the woodwork ont he first floor is another item that warrents your admiration.  The wood is English Golden Oak which came from Minnesota.  The staircase features 6 newel posts.  Each side of the square three-sided newel posts has a different design so be sure to check each one out.
The Frank House collection also contains artifacts related to Nebraska, Kearney and UNK hisotry.  There is a chair which was used by three presidents while visiting the area: Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy.
