Lincoln Children’s Zoo – Lincoln, Nebraska

The Lincoln Children’s Zoo is at the center of Lincoln, Nebraska. The address is 1222 South 27th Street. This attraction was opened in 1965 and is a private, non-profit entity. The Lincoln Children’s Zoo is committed to animal conservation, community education and meeting the diverse needs of various community members and groups. It currently has 300 animals and the botanical garden has over 400 species of plants to enjoy. The zoo is dedicated to helping preserve animals that are threatened, endangered and currently part of a species survival program.

The zoo has a wide range of unusual and interesting animals from pygmy marmosets to red pandas to scarlet macaws to dwarf crocodiles. The staff is eager to share information about the various animals and their habitats. This attraction also offers train and pony rides. Train rides are $2.50 and pony rides are $3.00. Passes with multiple rides are also available for purchase. When visitors get hungry, they can visit the Safari Café to get a tasty snack. Wild Things Gift Shop offers visitors interesting and unusual objects. The Café and Gift Shop are both open daily.

There are many special activities at the Lincoln Children’s Zoo. In the summer, Wild Wednesdays follow a special theme and offer great activities like scavenger hunts, animal demonstrations and fun, hands-on activities. They also offer groups such as boy scouts or 4-H groups the chance to spend the night at the zoo. Participants get to have a night hike, crafts, animal encounters and a chance to work on various merit badges. The kids get to spend the night, with a dinner of pizza and a continental breakfast included.

Zoo Camp is another fun activity sponsored by this popular attraction. It is a week long camp being held from October 30-November 3 in 2006 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Campers get to do a wide variety of activities. Other activities include a yearly Bug Bash to learn about bugs and the chance to book the zoo for a birthday or other event. The zoo also offers educational group tours, corporate tours, and special tours. There are many ways to enjoy the Lincoln Children’s Zoo and also many ways to help support this institution.

The regular season for the Lincoln Children’s Zoo is April 15 through October 15. The zoo is open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. On Wild Wednesdays during the summer months, it is open until 8:00 p.m. In addition to the regular season,Boo at the Zoo is offered, from October 26-30 from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. nightly to celebrate Halloween, and Winter Weekends, which are November 25-26 and December 2-3 from noon to 4:00 p.m. to celebrate the holidays.
