Nebraska State Capitol - Lincoln, Nebraska

The Nebraska State Capitol is one of the oldest and most beautiful historic buildings in the state of Nebraska. It is located in Lincoln, Nebraska, with an address of 1445 K Street. The Capitol building was designed by Bertram Goodhue and was built between 1922 and 1932. The Nebraska State Capitol is 400 feet tall and 440 feet wide at the base. This building is actually the third one to be built on the site, and is completely different from any of the previous buildings. It is more like an office tower than a typical Capitol building. The building is covered in Indiana limestone and is set with various stone carvings that pay homage to the evolution of democracy. The building was named as a National Historic Place in 1976 and also as a National Landmark in 1999.

The Nebraska State Capitol, in addition to housing various government offices also hosts noontime concerts, statewide non-profit programs, official state ceremonies and new conferences. Visitors are encouraged to view and enjoy these activities.

Tours are very popular at the Nebraska State Capitol. The tour takes visitors to the Vestibule, the Rotunda and the Foyer, which are considered to be Preservation areas because they have unique architectural details. These public areas of the building include marble columns, marble mosaic floors, and murals which feature Nebraska Native American history and pioneer history. The tours also include the Legislative Chamber and the Supreme Court if they are not in session at the time. Visitors can also access the observation area when the weather permits.

Visitors can take advantage of the courtyards or pedestrian mall that is north of the capitol to enjoy a picnic or snack. In addition, there is a cafeteria that is open Mondays through Fridays offering both breakfast and lunch.

To plan a tour of the Nebraska State Capitol is easy to do. The building is located at the intersection of K and 15th Streets. There are several parking choices, including free parking on the streets near the Capitol, in the residential areas that are adjacent to the Capitol, and in a public parking garage at 12th and L Streets. There are main floor entrances to the Capitol on all sides of the building for easy access.

The free, guided tours of the Nebraska State Capitol start on the second floor at the North Entrance. These tours can last anywhere from 30 to 55 minutes. The Capitol is busiest from January through June, and the tours for school children are generally done in March through May. Visitors can usually take a tour without having to make reservations unless they are coming with a large group.
