Waterman Sod HouseWaterman Sod House – Big Springs, Nebraska

Since the prairie has so few trees pioneers instead built houses made of sod. Many of these houses were built underground so that they resembled caves. This protected the early pioneers from the high winds and tornadoes, and gave them adequate shelter this treeless area.  As pioneers moved across the great prairie they discovered that this region did not have as many trees as did the eastern part of the country. They needed trees for lumber to build houses, barns, outhouses, and other necessary buildings.

The Waterman Sod House is one of the last of these famous sod houses built by pioneers.
