Mormon Trail - Western Nebraska
The Mormons traveled by the tens of thousands in creaking wagons, by horseback and on foot. Many made the 1,297-mile westward trek on foot, pulling 500 pounds of provisions and belongings in rickshaw-like handcarts. They built bridges. They braved unforgiving weather and fought disease. They buried their dead along the way. They were the Mormon people and in 1847 they began the greatest organized mass migration of a single group in America’s history. Read more
Sudmann Neumann Heritage House - Chappell, Nebraska
This 1911 house has been restored to its original condition complete with period furniture. This mansion was the first to have electric lights and running water along with a landscaped yard of flowers, trees, and shrubs. Read more
Waterman Sod House - Big Springs, Nebraska
Since the prairie has so few trees pioneers instead built houses made of sod. Many of these houses were built underground so that they resembled caves. This protected the early pioneers from the high winds and tornadoes, and gave them adequate shelter this treeless area. Read more
Carhenge - Alliance, Nebraska
Carhenge, which replicates Stonehenge, consists of the circle of cars, 3 standing trilithons within the circle, the heel stone, slaughter stone, and 2 station stones, and the Aubrey circle, named after Sir John Aubrey who first recognized the earthworks and great stones as a prehistoric temple in 1648.
